When discussing pressing your quilt for quilting we are talking about the seams, not the creases that come from folding and packing. To get the most success out of your quilting we want it to lay as flat as possible. This starts at the beginning stages of your piecing. This doesn't matter if you press to the dark or open, as much as we want it laying flat.
What if you didn't start at the beginning? You can still give it a good once over before sending it off to me or dropping it off. You can use an aid like a Eilleen's Best Press or a good ol' fashion spritz with a water mister. Seams that flip over on the back add extra depth to seams that make gliding over with a longarm more difficult and can be unsafe for the quilter and the machine with broken needles. Pressing these areas, where seam flipping happens, helps flatten it out.
That last press before dropping off or mailing will also help you identify any issues you might not have seen like a hole in the seam, shallow seam allowances that can lead to unraveling or bumps. You can also take this time to snip some of those long threads that were missed. It really is the perfect time to give it a good once over.
Pressing your seams flat as you go will help keep your quilt top as flat as possible at the end. Less work at the end is one step closer to that Victory Lap!
